Kansas Could Benefit from a Salina Corporate Growth

One of the most important industries in Salina is increasing its operations, which has the potential to create additional jobs in the state of Kansas.

Schwan’s, a Salina, Kansas-based company, is one of the nation’s largest producers of frozen pizza, and they commenced building a new facility in 2020 to accommodate growth. The company’s expansion will result in an additional 400,000 square feet of space.

According to the company, it has already begun hiring for more than 200 positions that will become available in the near future. Schwan estimates that the plant is approximately 550,000 square feet in size, and that the former facility employed more than 1,000 workers.

The majority of Schwan’s supplies are sourced from Kansas. According to the website, they get flour from Kansas mills, sausage from Tyson in Hutchinson, and packaging from a vendor in Kansas City, Missouri.

Tony’s and Red Barron, two of the plant’s vendors, have been ranked second in the nation in the frozen pizza market and first in the market for school pizzas, according to industry rankings.

The company has plans to expand while remaining environmentally conscious. These include reducing the plant’s water-to-water output by 10,000 gallons, partnering with Evergy to purchase renewable gas energy from Soldier Creek Wind Farm, and delivering natural gas efficiencies of 18,000 standard cubic feet per year.

As of now, the company believes it will be able to begin pizza production in the fall of 2022. In a statement, Christopher Wiseman, senior director of the Schwan factory, stated that manufacturing will begin in December 2022.
